D50 or D40?

I went to Ritz Camera yesterday to return a photo frame that I had bought for my CSTE certificate. The DSLR curiosity got over me again and I started asking about the DSLRs. Well, I was planning to buy Nikon D50 or Canon Digital Rebel Xt till yesterday (more inclined towards Nikon) and knew that Nikon has launched a new DLSR - Nikon D40. But when I talked to the sales lady at the shop, I came to know that Nikon D40 is actually the replacement for the D50 and Nikon has stopped producing D50, meaning D50 will soon vanish from the market. D40 is much smaller in size and lighter in weight than the D50. I could feel the difference when I held both the cameras. D40 lacks some of the features that D50 has but I don't think I'll really miss those. All I am bothered about is the lenses. D40 will need special lenses which have the autofocus motor built inside the lens, instead of the other lenses that are used on cameras (including D50) that have the motor in the camera body and the D40 lenses cost a lot more than those for D50. So, I am in a dilemna- D50 or D40 ?
